What to do against aphids on roses? Effective and eco-friendly solutions
Aphids on your roses can be a frustrating challenge, but fortunately there are several natural and effective ways to combat these unwanted visitors. In this blog, you will discover what you can do to prevent and fight aphids on roses without using harmful chemicals.
What are aphids and why do they appear?
Aphids are small, soft insects that feed on the sap of plants. They mainly appear in spring and summer, when the weather gets warmer. Although a small number of aphids is not a problem, a large infestation can weaken your roses.
1. Remove aphids with water and your hands
A simple but effective method is to spray the aphids off your roses with water. Use a strong jet of water for this. If you prefer not to waste water, you can also gently wipe the aphids away with your hands.
2. Diatomaceous earth as a natural barrier
Diatomaceous earth is a natural powder containing microscopically sharp particles. These particles damage the exoskeleton of the aphids, causing them to dry out. Sprinkle a thin layer of diatomaceous earth on and around your roses for effective protection.
How I fight aphids
I personally use water, diatomaceous earth, and my hands to fight aphids. If there are only a few, I just leave them be.
3. Mixture of water and green soap
A classic among natural remedies is a mixture of water and green soap. This mixture clogs the breathing openings of the aphids, causing them to die. Mix 20 ml of green soap per litre of water and spray this on the affected leaves.
4. Plant garlic near roses
Garlic contains sulphur and other substances that give off a scent repellent to aphids. Plant garlic among your rose bushes to deter aphids.
5. Attract natural enemies like ladybirds
Aphids have natural enemies such as ladybirds and their larvae. By making your garden attractive to these helpful insects, for example with insect homes, you give nature a helping hand. These insect homes are offered through Our Second Home, a social workplace.
6. Attract birds with nest boxes
Birds such as sparrows, blue tits, and robins love to eat aphids. Place nest boxes in your garden to attract these birds. Start early so they have a permanent place in your garden next year.
7. Mealworms and seeds to lure birds
Want to attract birds quickly? Place dishes with mealworms near your roses. This attracts small birds that love aphids. Be careful not to attract large birds like crows with this.
8. Don’t worry too much
A tip from an experienced grower: don’t worry too much about a small amount of aphids. Within a few weeks, natural enemies like ladybirds and their larvae will appear. They will clean up the aphids for you. I have already spotted several ladybirds among the roses.
Conclusion
Aphids on roses are annoying, but with these natural methods you can effectively fight them without burdening your garden with chemical pesticides. Do you have a golden tip to fight aphids? Let us know in the comments!
