Pruning
The autumn pruning aims to protect roses against winter. It is a simple pruning and not much work. Simply cut the bush down to knee height. You do not need to pay attention to buds. The bush becomes sturdier and therefore less sensitive to frost and wind. Does the thought of cutting off late blooms break your heart? Then place the flowers inside in a vase to enjoy them a little longer.
Cleaning beds
Clean beds are important. Remove fallen leaves and loosen the soil well with a rake. An open structure allows nutrients to penetrate better.
Mounding
Roses are sensitive to frost. Therefore, cover the bottom 15 centimeters with a generous layer of soil. It is very important that the graft union is well protected against frost. You recognize this point by the side shoots growing from the root. Only in March or April during the spring pruning do you remove this extra protection.
Planting bare root roses
Autumn is the best time to plant roses. The soil is still warm, allowing the root to attach before winter. This gives the rose a head start for the next season.
Rose nurseries
Autumn is a busy period for a rose grower. Roses are dug up as bare root, rinsed, assessed for quality, labeled, and brought to the cooling where the rose is well protected. A rose nursery sells bare root roses from that moment on. So you are buying fresh plants from the new harvest. An additional advantage is that the selection is largest at this time of year.
