Henri Martin at a glance
Henri Martin is a distinctive garden rose that attracts attention even before it blooms. Its elongated flower buds are covered with fine, light-green growths that resemble moss. From them emerge elegant, semi-double flowers: crimson at first, later developing purple-red nuances. A strong, classic rose fragrance completes its appearance.
This historic moss rose was introduced in 1863 by the French breeder Jean Laffay. It was named after Henri Martin, the French historian and writer who became known for his work on the history of France.
Its value as part of our rose heritage lies mainly in the character of moss roses: the striking buds, pronounced fragrance, and romantic summer flowering. With Henri Martin, you preserve a unique form of nineteenth-century rose culture in your own garden.
The vigorous shrub forms gracefully arching branches and blooms once in June and July. Later, colourful rose hips appear. It looks beautiful at the back of a spacious border, as a standalone shrub, or in an informal rose hedge. Give it enough room; the long branches may need some support.
Forty years of nothing but roses
Belle Époque is a family business, not a wholesaler. From our greenhouses in Aalsmeer, we have been growing only roses for over four decades — and every plant we send out is personally selected by us. This way, you receive not a catalog rose, but a plant ready to grow.
