Alba Maxima at a glance
Some roses connect generations of garden lovers. Rosa ‘Alba Maxima’ is one such rose: a centuries-old Alba rose whose exact origin is unknown. David Austin dates it to around 1500. Its Latin name literally means ‘the largest white’ - a fitting name for this imposing shrub rose.
Its history extends beyond the garden. Alba Maxima is also known as the Jacobite Rose: according to the Historic Roses Group, this double white rose was an emblem of the Jacobites in the eighteenth century, the supporters of the House of Stuart. A remarkable historical story behind its delicate appearance.
The double flowers open with a light pink blush and then turn creamy white. Their strong, classic rose fragrance makes the once-yearly summer flowering especially remarkable. Outside the flowering period, the grey-green foliage gives the shrub character. Alba Maxima can also grow very old: a beautiful choice for a garden that is allowed to develop over the years.
Give this historic white garden rose space in a border or informal rose hedge. Partial shade is also suitable. With its generous growth and romantic flowers, it fits beautifully in a country garden.
Forty years of nothing but roses
Belle Époque is a family business, not a wholesaler. From our greenhouses in Aalsmeer, we have been growing only roses for over four decades — and every plant we send out is personally selected by us. This way, you receive not a catalog rose, but a plant ready to grow.
"Beautiful climbing rose, bloomed abundantly in the very first year! Well packaged and exactly what I expected based on the description. Belle Époque truly delivers top quality."
"The rose is well packaged and looks beautiful. Fast delivery, and the personal advice via email was very valuable — I wasn’t sure where to plant it."
